Transform Raw LIDAR into Useful 3D Model

If you're letting your LIDAR data sit on a self and gather dust, you're missing out on a highly accurate source of information. The LIDAR Analyst® 5.0 software extension is the premier 3D feature extraction solution for airborne LIDAR data, allowing geospatial analysts to unlock the value of LIDAR data by automatically extracting 3D objects such as bare earth, trees, or buildings.

Rapidly inventory all the buildings across a city or area of interest by using LIDAR Analyst's advanced algorithms to detect, recognize, and extract complex 3D building shapes. Count the trees in a forest or scattered throughout a neighborhood. Strip away the buildings, trees, and shrubbery to reveal the true ground level for a detailed digital elevation model, especially useful for mountainous terrain. Open results in standard geospatial software like RemoteView 3D Pro or ArcGIS® 3D Analyst for three-dimensional viewing, simulation, and analysis.

Challenge: Where on Earth?

Objects on the ground tend to look a little different when viewed from space. For example, take a look at this natural wonder of the world. Have any guesses about the site?

Here are three clues to help:

• The object towers over the landscape , rising 1,267 feet (386 meters) above the surrounding plain.

• The object is made of igneous rock, forged in temperatures that might have been as hot as hell.

• The name became grammatically incorrect when someone forgot to include an apostrophe in the official proclamation designating it a national monument.

RemoteView Tips & Tricks

RemoteView Pro imagery and geospatial analysis software is packed with capabilities, so analysts may not be aware of simple shortcuts that can save time. Here are five quick tricks that might improve your workflow experience:

#1: Quick Arrow - Create a text box. Left click once on the text box, then hold down the CTRL key and left click anywhere on the image. An arrow is instantly drawn pointing from the text box to the place where you clicked on the image.

#2: Grab and Drag - As an alternative to roaming, you may want to grab and drag for small viewing adjustments. Hold the SHIFT key and right click the mouse. A hand appears. As you move the mouse, the hand drags the image across the screen.

#3: Auto Labeling - If you customize the Count Tag label, include a space followed by the number one after the custom name (such as Tank 1 or Boat 1). The label will automatically increment the number as you label the objects. Hold down the SHIFT key while clicking the +1 button to initiate labeling and the tool will remain active, allowing you to label and increment with every left click until you press the +1 button again.

#4: Quick Jump - Hold down the CTRL key and left click anywhere on the Overview window and the Main Viewer will jump to that location (2.8.0 or higher version), or just left click anywhere on the Overview window (Version 3.2.0).

#5: Metadata Pull - Left click and drag image metadata from the Image Metadata window (see figure above) into the Main Viewer and the actual metadata appears as a text box on the image (2.8.0 or higher version). Left click and drag the name of the image metadata category from the Image Metadata window onto a custom Template and the automatically updating $$ placeholder for the metadata appears (Version 3.2.0).
