Feature Analyst

Assisting Feature Extraction and Freeing GIS Analysts

Feature Analyst software is an automated feature extraction extension that enables GIS analyst to rapidly and accurately collect vector feature data from high-resolution satellite and aerial imagery. Many geospatial analysts have discovered that Feature Analyst helps them achieve more. With much of GIS implementation and management costs being attributed to staying up-to-date with the daily deluge of image data, the ability to quickly extract features from GIS data is a major necessity. Feature Analyst software was specifically created to meet this need and enable analysts to collect linear and polygonal features such as hydrologic zones, buildings, roads, vegetation, and land-use.

Key Product Features

• A simple interface, end-to-end workflow, and model-based approach for extracting
a wide range of geospatial features.

• A customizable extraction process that suggests settings for specific feature types,
but allows the user to adjust settings to produce the best results.

• Users have an opportunity to evaluate their learning settings beforehand and
"preview" results before running them on a larger image.

• Multi-threading capabilities leverage multi-core systems to increase processing
  speed on complex extractions.

• Clean-up and vector editing tools for refining the final output.

• The Building Collection Toolkit minimizes the amount of user input that is required
to extract a complete building from RGB and panchromatic imagery.

• Able to be used as a standalone extension or in conjunction with the LIDAR Analyst
extension as an integrated suite of tools for creating and analyzing 3D urban models.

Examples of the Product in Use

Easily outline   buildings and map   cities.

  Compare permeable   vs. impermeable   surfaces.

Extract large-scale   ground cover such as   forests.

Isolate bodies of   water and define the   shoreline.

Why is Feature Analyst Software so Effective?

Feature Analyst software utilizes the spatial context as well as the spectral and pattern information within the image. The user selects training sites that represents the desired feature, then chooses a template that examines the spatial context of the target pixels within the training sites. Spatial context evaluates not only the target pixels, but the surrounding pixels to learn what to look for in the rest of the image.

Spatial Context

Feature Analyst offers a selection of templates optimized for feature classes such as ground cover or man-made objects. The size of each template is adjustable and users have the option to create a template for a specific need.

The user is able to reinforce the extraction model to improve results by selecting correct and incorrect examples from the initial returned set of features. This iteration, called Hierarchical Learning, is an essential component of the Feature Analyst machine-learning process.

Product Compatibility

Works as an extension for Esri ArcGIS® or Overwatch's ELT/5500® and Global Image Viewer® (GIV) geospatial analysis software.
